Evolution in Primal Dread — Mecha or Mutation, which path fits your build

Evolution is the headline mechanic of Primal Dread. It's a stat you push in one of two directions, and the enemies change with you. Here is what's confirmed and how we'd think about the choice.

The two paths

Mecha reinforces your weapons and hands out extra stats. In return the jungle fills with mecha dinosaurs that fire lasers and drop oil puddles. Lasers punish standing in lines, and oil slowly takes floor space away from you.

Mutation copies your items, which multiplies their effects. One good item becomes two, then more. The enemies become mutants that spread acid, so damage comes from the ground as much as from contact.

A simple rule for choosing

Ask where your build's power lives.

  • In the weapons? Go Mecha. Characters who scale off one weapon class, like Brawler with unarmed or Ranger with guns, get more from reinforced weapons than from copied items.
  • In the items? Go Mutation. Lucky, Curious and the economy characters get stronger with every item, so copying items should snowball hardest for them.

If you can't tell, look at your last winning run. If you were hunting one weapon type in the shop, you're a Mecha player. If you were hunting one item, you're a Mutation player.

What we don't know yet

  • How Evolution is gained: level-ups, items, a shop choice or something new
  • Whether it has a cap like Curse does
  • Which items get copied on Mutation, and whether unique items are excluded
  • How it treats Engineering structures and pets

We test these in game this week and fill in the Evolution stat page. Until then, treat any "best path" claim you see as a guess, including ours.
