Merge or buy new — the weapon upgrade decision in every shop
Updated 2026-11-03 · for v1.1 + Paws & Claws
Every shop in Brotato puts the same question on the table: merge two copies of a weapon into the next tier, or keep both and fill a slot. The answer changes with the wave, and getting it wrong is the quiet reason many runs stall around wave 12.
What a merge actually does
Two weapons of the same name and tier combine into one weapon of the next tier. Damage, attack speed and crit all step up, and the merged weapon keeps its class, so set bonuses only drop if the merge empties a slot you do not refill. Tier IV is the cap, and the jump from Tier III to Tier IV is the biggest one in the game.
The rule by wave
Waves 1–5: buy, do not merge. Six Tier I weapons out-damage three Tier II weapons because the early enemies die to anything. Fill the slots first.
Waves 6–12: merge when a slot can be refilled the same shop. If you have two Tier I Pistols and the shop offers a third, merge the pair and buy the third. The set count is unchanged, and one weapon just doubled.
Waves 13–20: merge aggressively. Enemy health outruns the sum of small weapons; one Tier IV hits for more than two Tier IIIs and uses fewer slots, which matters for characters who get stats from empty slots like Captain.
When to sell instead
Sell a weapon when its class no longer matches the set you are building. A single off-class Tier II is worth less than the set bonus step you lose by keeping it. Selling returns part of the price, which funds a reroll.
Characters that break the rule
- Vagabond cannot hold duplicates at all, so merging is off the table; upgrades come only from the shop's tier rolls.
- Gladiator wants six different weapons for attack speed, so merging shrinks the bonus.
- One Armed has one slot and should merge every single time a copy appears.
- Multitasker holds twelve, which makes cheap volume better than tiers until very late.
A test you can run in your head
Ask: after this merge, do I still have the same number of weapons? If yes, merge. If no, is the next tier worth more than the set bonus step I lose? Before wave 12 the answer is usually no; after, usually yes. The build planner shows both numbers side by side.
