Brotato mods not working after Update 1.2: what to do

Updated 2026-11-02 · for 1.2.0.0

If your Brotato mods stopped working on 2 November, the likely cause is Update 1.2. It came out with the Primal Dread DLC, and the developers warn that outdated mods can cause conflicts. Their advice is to turn off all your mods before you play.

Most mods need an update from their author after a big patch, so a broken mod usually isn't something you did wrong.

Fix it in four steps

  1. Turn off every mod. On Steam, the sure way is to unsubscribe on the Brotato Workshop. You can subscribe again later.
  2. Start the game without mods. If it runs, a mod was the problem. If it still crashes, go to step 3.
  3. Verify the game files. In your Steam library, right-click Brotato, then Properties, Installed Files, Verify integrity of game files.
  4. Bring mods back one at a time. Check each mod's Workshop page for an update dated after 2 November first. Add one, start a run, then add the next, so you can see which one breaks things.

Mods not showing up in the game

A few plain things to check:

  • Is it downloaded? Steam has to finish downloading a Workshop item, and it can sit in the queue behind a big update. Check your Steam downloads page.
  • Is it on the right store? The Workshop is a Steam feature, so Workshop mods don't appear in the Epic or GOG versions.
  • Does the mod need another mod? Brotato mods run on the community's ModLoader, and some mods list others they depend on. The Workshop page says so.

We can't test every mod, so we won't list which ones work. The comments on a mod's Workshop page are usually the fastest way to find out.

Steam Deck

The steps are the same on Steam Deck, because Workshop mods come through Steam there too. Start with every mod turned off.

Can I play Primal Dread with mods?

You can try, once your mods are updated. Mods written before 2 November don't know about the Jungle, the new characters or the Evolution stat, so expect trouble until their authors catch up. If you only want to remove some content, the new Item Sets menu needs no mods.
