Brotato save file location on Windows, Steam Deck and Linux

Updated 2026-11-03 · for 1.2.0.0

On Windows, your Brotato save is in %APPDATA%\Brotato, inside a folder named after your Steam ID. Paste %APPDATA%\Brotato into the File Explorer address bar to go straight there.

These paths come from players and PCGamingWiki, not from the developers, so back up the folder before you change anything.

Where to look

Setup Path
Windows, launched from Steam %APPDATA%\Brotato\<your Steam ID>\
Windows, launched directly from the game file %APPDATA%\Brotato\user\
Steam Deck or Linux with Proton ~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/1942280/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/AppData/Roaming/Brotato/

The full Windows path is usually C:\Users\<your name>\AppData\Roaming\Brotato. AppData is a hidden folder, so it's easiest to use the shortcut above. The save files themselves are .json files.

We haven't confirmed the paths for the Epic, GOG, mobile or console versions. On consoles and phones you normally can't reach the files anyway.

How to back up your save

  1. Close Brotato.
  2. Copy the whole Brotato folder somewhere safe.
  3. To restore it, close the game and copy the folder back.

Moving or editing a save

Steam Cloud can overwrite a save you've just moved with an older copy. Before moving one to a new PC, players recommend turning off Steam Cloud in the game's Properties in Steam. Turn it back on when you're done.

Be careful with mods too. The developers warned in their All Pain No Gain post that incompatible mods can corrupt your save data, and after Update 1.2 they ask you to turn off all mods before playing. Back up first, and see what to do if your mods stop working.

Lost your progress?

If your unlocks seem to have vanished, check which folder the game is using. Launching from Steam and launching the game file directly can use different folders, so your progress may just be in the other one.
