For most people who already enjoy Brotato, yes. At $3.99 you get a new map, 10 characters, 17 weapons and 40 items. If you've never finished a run in the base game, start there first.

A fair warning: the DLC only came out on 2 November, so this is based on what's in it, not on a long test.

What you get for the money

Primal Dread Abyssal Terrors

List price (US) $3.99 $3.99
New characters 10 14

New items 40 36

Headline mechanic Evolution Curse

Abyssal Terrors was on sale at $3.19 and the base game at $2.49 ($4.99 list) when we checked on 2 November, so look at the store before you buy.

Do I need Abyssal Terrors for Primal Dread?

No. The Steam store lists Brotato itself as the game you need, and it doesn't list Abyssal Terrors as a requirement.

Buy it if

  • You've won a few runs and want new reasons to play
  • You like building around one idea. Evolution gives every run a choice between weapons (Mecha) and items (Mutation)
  • You like achievement hunting. There's one new achievement per new character, and the new ones are kept separate from the base game's, so your 100% stays safe

Wait if

  • You rely on mods. The developers warn that outdated mods can conflict with Update 1.2, which came out at the same time.
  • You play on console or mobile. It doesn't reach those platforms until early 2027.
  • You want settled balance. The developers say they plan changes based on feedback now that it's out.

You get some of it for free

Update 1.2 is free for everyone, whether you buy the DLC or not. It adds Item Sets, buffs 8 older characters and eases Nightmare difficulty. See the patch notes.
