Apprentice guide — how to play Apprentice in Brotato
Updated 2026-11-01 · for v1.1 + Paws & Claws
A character that turns every level into a small, permanent stat package. Our tier list puts Apprentice in B tier: Flat stats on level-up. Fine on every build, great on none.
The stat line
- +2 Melee Damage when you level up
- +1 Ranged Damage when you level up
- +1 Elemental Damage when you level up
- +1 Engineering when you level up
- -2 Max HP when you level up
Unlock: Reach level 20. Winning a run unlocks Quarterstaff.
How the run plays
Every level-up hands you +2 melee, +1 ranged, +1 elemental and +1 engineering, so the Apprentice is agnostic about weapon class: pick whichever class the first two shops offer and merge hard. The hidden cost is -2 Max HP per level, which adds up to a thin potato by wave 15, so the stat you actually need to buy is Max HP.
Weapons
Apprentice can choose from 23 Tier I starting weapons and has no class preference built in: pick whichever class the first two shops lean toward and hold six of it for the set bonus.
What to buy, what to skip
Max HP every time it appears, then Armor. Skip XP-gain items; they just accelerate the HP loss.
The shop favours XP Gain items for Apprentice, so expect to see these often: Scar, Celery Tea, Black Belt, Peacock, Bean Teacher, Barnacle, Diploma.
The mistake that ends runs
Spreading across classes because every damage stat grows — the set bonus still matters more than the free points.
